I got it in and never updated it and its worked fine in the UK. I have been very happy with TomTom sat navs for years but bought a Garmin after Christmas, having read recommendations by Which? One feature that lets it down is the pronunciation of street names, some of which are quite entertaining. I see that many TomTom and Garmin sat navs come with lifetime maps these days.
Hopefully car manufacturers will do the same and stop exploiting their customers. Using an Android Smartphone or tablet with even a free Navigation app would be a solution, if that App uses Openstreetmap maps. Openstreetmaps are free and kept up to date by millions of online contributors. I bought my new car without a costly fixed navigation system. Instead I am using a nice tablet with an easy vent holder. Now I got the freedom of choosing my navigation apps and maps.

Why would you pay this when one can buy a new one WITH lifetime updates for only a little more. Garmin should think again and reduce their prices for updates drastically and match Tom-Tom.
They also have extras like lane guidance. With Ford how would you know how old the maps are you are buying? There is a tiny cost for the SD card but how can Ford justify the charge? I feel this is totally out of order. I understand this part is sourced from Bosch, and called Bosch for their price: they told me they do not supply their SD cards to end users. There are sites that can provide free maps that are compatible with hand-held devices.

A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. At the end of the process your sat-nav will be right up to date. There are a few things to keep in mind. Register your sat-nav by entering your email address when requested to do so.
I recommend that you only use Express if you have a good and reliable broadband connection as some of the maps files are very large and take several hours to download from Garmin. During the update procedure and depending on your device, you may be asked to disconnent your sat-nav from your PC and reboot it turning it back on. This step is the installation of the latest software not the maps for your device. The software update procedure can take several minutes to complete so be patient.
It is advisable not to update your sat-nav if the battery is flat, make sure it is charged. Your sat-nav may not have sufficient space for the map update. Always make sure you have the latest version of Garmin Express installed before updating your sat-nav. You can check this by clicking the 'cog' icon, top right hand side of the Garmin Express window and clicking on the link in the 'About Garmin Express' panel.
Now the bad news. Unfortunately, Garmin Express does not always work. Sometimes it has trouble recognising the devices that are connected to it.
