This has worked for a USB flash drive thumb drive in XP but might work for other removable hardware as well. Clearing any corruption with these can bring back the USB support. Search Microsoft for their utility for doing this. It's all done over the web very painless. It sounds like your user profile has become corrupt, so these steps may or may not help. Have you scanned for viruses or other malware recently?

So I put windows to sleep and removed the external drive, then i plugged in another drive of the same type.
When Windows woke up, it assumed that the same drive was connected and totally corrupted it. DONT swap external drives of the same type while windows is asleep. I usually cope fairly well with my computer, but that one stomped me! I made a shortcut to avoid this nuisance in the future. I suppose, Windows does not recognize every USB or Flash drive… At least not all the time, or perhaps, it is a little bug! I keep having the same problem as Thomas. I keep getting an error message saying RunD Every time the icon was gone, but I have made a shortcut now. The icon is back on the tray near the klok.
