Growing up, Malin saw footbag as an alternative to more organized sports. Similarly, James began playing hacky sack back in , and while his friends and everyone else in his high school eventually grew tired of the sport by , James continued on.
Hacky sack is now a game of elite professional skills. As guys like James continued to hone their hacky sack abilities while everyone else moved on to Yo-Yos, hacky sack tournaments began to sprout up. James has competed in the world championships twice when it was hosted in Montreal.
So the social aspect is really important, and I really like our footbag community. Although hacky sack is kept alive by a few stray hippies in their 40s — and highly skilled competitors — is there any chance it can reach the popularity it once had?
Real question. While circle traditionally is not about hogging the bag and that you pass it on in the count and catch game you will want to juggle it as many times as possible and end with a catch. Then once complete you will pass the bag onto the next player whose goal is to juggle at least one more time than you. Should the next player juggle more than you and catch the footbag afterwards than you are out, so maximizing your count matters! For beginners this game is very entertaining as you will have less overall juggles and time, this game becomes less interesting the more experienced you become as you will spend longer waiting for your chance to play.
This player can attempt to dodge the ball but must ensure at least one foot stays anchored in place, if they are hit they are out of the game. This player in the middle will be replaced when one of two game events occur, they block a pass or the player kicks the bag out of bounds.
Very much similar to the game with the red rubber ball from elementary school four square is focused around having four players attempt to cover and defend their square from having the footbag hit inside. Typically you would determine how many rounds a player needs to stay in square one to be declared the winner and the goal of everyone else is to knock off player one while also moving themselves up squares towards being in square one.
Golf is a more unique game where you set up a hole with a start point and a bucket at the end, your goal being to cover the distance between and put your bag in the bucket in the least amount of kicks possible. Unlike many other games where you are aiming to control kicks in a close proximity of your body, in golf you are attempting to typically kick longer distances but also with accuracy. These shoes have a thick sole, and they are good at absorbing shock.
Furthermore, these shoes have a flat toe area, making it easier for players to stall a Hacky Sack. Several players also modify their shoes to make them more suitable for playing Hacky Sack.
For instance, many players use a popular lacing style to pull apart the edges of the toe area. This lacing technique increases the flat toe area and makes stalling easier.
There is a lack of a standardized set of rules in Hacky sack. Furthermore, there are multiple variations of the game that are currently played. Like Freestyle Footbag, some are played professionally. On the other hand, circle kicking is mostly played casually and in a non-competitive environment.
Therefore, an unwritten set of rules primarily governs such versions of Hacky Sack. Circle kicking is arguably the most popular version of Hacky Sack. It involves a group of players standing in a circle. A player starts a game by servicing the ball to a player standing next to them. And then, the player receiving the ball is expected to pass the ball to the next player.
We have already talked about this version in our article. An individual plays this form of Hacky Sack at a time. It focuses on tricks, stalls, and routines rather than passing the ball amongst players. For example, the ending position of one trick becomes the starting position of the next, and so on. Players are also judged on the difficulty level of their tricks. Then, practice dropping, kicking, and catching the sack until you can consistently kick the bag straight up.
Once you feel comfortable performing an inside kick with 1 foot, be sure to practice this kick with your other foot. Use the outside of your foot to perform an outside kick. Gently drop the sack with your arm outstretched to the side and use the middle of the outside of your foot to kick the bag upwards. Just like with an inside kick, angle your ankle to keep your foot parallel to the ceiling in order to kick the hacky sack straight up. This is ok! It will get easier with practice.
Drop the sack and kick it with your toes to do a toe kick. Make sure to drop the sack a little bit further in front of you than you would when performing an inside kick.
Use your toes to kick the bag straight up in the air. Be sure to kick your toes up instead of toward your head to avoid getting hit with the hacky sack! Be sure to keep your feet low and kick with the center of your foot.
Practice performing stalls if you want to be able to perform tricks. A stall is when you drop the hacky sack and catch it with your foot instead of kicking it. To perform a stall, catch the sack with your foot by gently lowering your foot in a cradling motion when the hacky sack hits it. This will help absorb the impact of the bag on the foot and keep it from bouncing off the side. Just like with kicks, you can perform inside stalls, outside stalls, and toe stalls by changing the location on your foot where you catch the sack.
Do various combinations of kicks and stalls to perform advanced tricks. Try doing patterns, such as outside left, inside left, inside right, outside right, or whatever you want to make up.
This will also help you learn to control where you want the bag to go, which is good for both performing tricks and for playing actual games. To do the Rainbow, use outside kicks to move the hacky sack from 1 side of your body to the other over your head. Method 2. Start by gathering at least 2 people in a circle. You can technically play a hacky sack game with only 2 people, but the game will be a lot more fun if you have 3 or more players. Keep the circle about 4 to 5 feet 1.
Have 1 person use their hands to serve the sack to someone else. Serving the sack just involves that person throwing it to another player so that the second player can kick it to another player. This is the only time in the game that a person is allowed to use their hands. Pass the sack between each other for as long as possible. The goal of the game is to use your feet, legs, and forehead to avoid letting the sack hit the ground.
Whenever the sack is kicked toward you, kick it back to a different player to keep the game going. For example, try requiring each player to kick the sack to themselves a certain number of times before they can pass it to someone else. Restart the game whenever someone lets the sack hit the ground. This person now has to serve the hacky sack to another player.
